Comprehensive AI SEO Audit

SEO audit services that find what’s actually broken

Most businesses don’t know why their site stopped ranking. Traffic drops, a competitor moves up, and the instinct is to write more content β€” when the actual cause might be a robots.txt line blocking half the site, or a redesign eighteen months ago that quietly broke internal linking.

An SEO audit is a full diagnostic review of a website’s technical health, content, and off-page signals, producing a prioritized list of what’s actually holding it back. That’s the whole idea in one sentence; everything below is how we actually do it.

This is different from technical SEO, which is the fix-it work an audit’s findings point toward β€” and different from a content audit, which looks specifically at existing content quality and decay. An SEO audit is the diagnostic that tells you which of those you actually need, and in what order.

Service overview

  • Full technical review β€” crawlability, indexation, Core Web Vitals, structured data, mobile usability
  • On-page and content analysis β€” keyword alignment, intent matching, duplicate or thin content
  • Off-page and backlink profile review β€” link quality, toxic link identification
  • AEO/GEO readiness check β€” how well the site is structured for AI Overviews and answer engines
  • A prioritized action plan, ranked by impact β€” not just a list of everything that’s wrong

What an SEO audit actually involves

A real audit starts with a full crawl, not a quick tool export β€” plenty of “free audits” out there are just a PDF of whatever a scanning tool spat out, unread by an actual person. We check whether search engines can actually reach and index every page that should be indexed, and flag every page that’s being indexed but shouldn’t be.

Technical foundation comes first because it gates everything else. A perfectly optimized page that’s accidentally noindexed, or buried five clicks deep in the site architecture, never gets the chance to compete on content quality. We regularly find sites with a canonical tag quietly pointing at the wrong URL, or a robots.txt rule written for a staging environment that never got removed after launch β€” small, easy-to-miss lines that undo months of otherwise good work.

On-page and content analysis comes next. We check whether existing pages actually match what people are searching for, not just whether they contain the right keywords β€” intent mismatch is a more common problem than most site owners expect. A page can be keyword-perfect and still lose, because it answers a different question than the one being asked.

Off-page review rounds it out. We look at the backlink profile for both opportunity and risk β€” toxic or manipulative-looking links can hold a site back just as much as a missing one helps it.

In 2026, a real audit also has to check AI-readiness. Most websites score below 35% on AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) readiness checks β€” structured FAQ content, clear entity definitions, question-shaped headings β€” which is often the single biggest opportunity we find, since almost nobody has done this work yet.

Here’s how the three related diagnostic services actually differ:

Β Why this matters for AI search

An audit that only checks traditional SEO signals is already incomplete in 2026. Pew Research found that people click through to a normal search result on roughly 8% of searches that show an AI-generated summary, compared to about 15% when no summary appears β€” a real, measured drop in traditional click-through that makes AI visibility a genuine business concern, not a future one.

AEO readiness is where most sites have the most room to improve. A clear entity definition near the top of a page, headings phrased as real questions, and FAQ markup all help an AI system extract a clean answer without guessing β€” and most sites simply haven’t done this work yet, which is exactly why an audit needs to check for it explicitly rather than assuming it as a bonus.

How we run an SEO audit

  1. Full site crawl β€” technical health, indexation, crawl budget, structured data
  2. Content and intent analysis β€” what’s ranking, what’s not, and why
  3. Backlink and off-page review β€” opportunity and risk assessment
  4. AEO/GEO readiness check β€” AI Overview and answer engine extractability
  5. Prioritized roadmap delivery β€” ranked by impact, not just severity

Who this is for

This service fits any business unsure why its site isn’t performing β€” a site that’s plateaued, dropped after a redesign, or never been properly reviewed. It’s also the right first step before committing budget to technical SEO, content work, or a redesign, since it tells you what’s actually worth fixing first.

Businesses that haven’t had a comprehensive audit in the last 6–12 months, per current industry consensus, are due for one regardless of whether anything looks obviously wrong β€” issues compound quietly, and a “sudden” traffic drop is often the visible result of months of undetected technical debt.

Results and proof

The SEO services market itself reflects how seriously businesses now treat this work β€” global spend is projected to reach $108.28 billion in 2026, up from $81.46 billion in 2024, per market research from Xamzor. Separately, WebFX’s own audit client data shows 91% of businesses report finding real value in their SEO audit results β€” a second, independent data point pointing the same direction.

What we can say honestly about our own work: our audits follow the same full-stack process described above β€” technical, content, off-page, and AI-readiness together, not a partial checklist. We don’t yet have a published, named case study specifically for this service to link here. That’s coming as current engagements complete, and we’d rather say that plainly than dress up a number we can’t stand behind.

SEO audit FAQ

What is an SEO audit?
A full diagnostic review of a website’s technical health, content quality, and off-page signals, producing a prioritized list of issues ranked by impact β€” not just a list of everything that’s technically wrong.

How much does an SEO audit cost?
Most small-to-mid businesses pay $500–$5,000 for a comprehensive audit, per 2026 industry pricing data, with basic/limited-scope audits starting around $100–$750 and enterprise-level audits running $7,500–$20,000+ depending on site size and complexity.

How often should you get an SEO audit?
A comprehensive audit every 6–12 months is the general consensus, with lighter quarterly check-ins on priority areas in between β€” plus an immediate audit after a major redesign, migration, or unexplained traffic drop.

What’s the difference between a technical SEO audit and a full SEO audit?
A technical audit covers infrastructure only β€” crawlability, indexation, page speed, structured data. A full audit includes all of that plus content quality, backlink profile, and AI-readiness (AEO/GEO) β€” see the comparison above for how this differs from Technical SEO and Content Audit specifically.

Does an SEO audit check for AI search readiness?
It should, and ours does. Most sites score below 35% on AEO readiness checks, which makes this one of the highest-opportunity findings in a modern audit rather than an optional add-on.
