Link Building
Link building services built on editorial standards, not shortcuts
Most businesses that come to us for link building have already been burned once. They paid for a bundle of links, watched their referring domains count go up, and watched their rankings do nothing.
That’s not a coincidence. A link from an unrelated site with no real audience tells search engines very little, no matter what the invoice says.
Link building is the practice of earning links from other websites β real editorial links, not purchased placements β that tell search engines and AI systems your site is worth trusting. That’s the whole idea in one sentence; everything below is how we actually do it.
If you haven’t run a technical SEO audit or an SEO audit yet, that’s usually the better starting point. Link building works best once there’s a site worth linking to. This page assumes you’re past that stage and ready to build authority on top of it, as part of a broader search visibility strategy.
Service overview
- Competitor backlink gap analysis β where your competitors are getting links you aren’t
- Digital PR and journalist outreach, including HARO-style response campaigns
- Personalized guest post outreach to relevant, editorially-run publications
- Link-worthy content planning, coordinated with our content strategy work
- Toxic and spammy link identification, with disavow guidance where warranted
- Monthly reporting on placements, referring domains, and link quality β not just a link count
What link building actually involves
A campaign starts with research, not outreach. We map who’s already linking to your competitors. We flag which of those sites would realistically link to you too. We ignore the rest, regardless of authority score.
Outreach has to be specific after that. Per OutreachZ’s 2026 link-building research, personalized pitches sent to a small, curated list of around 50 prospects converted at 25β30%. Templated mass sends to thousands converted at 1β2%. That gap is the entire argument for doing fewer, better pitches.
Domain Rating and Domain Authority are useful for triage. They’re not a quality certificate on their own. A DR 30 site that’s genuinely relevant to your industry often earns more trust β from readers and search engines alike β than a DR 70 site with no topical connection to your business.
Digital PR and guest posting both still work, but they solve different problems:
| Β | Digital PR | Guest posting |
|---|---|---|
| What it earns | Media mentions, often unlinked or lightly linked | A direct link, usually in a byline or body |
| Effort per placement | Higher β needs a real story or data | Lower β needs a relevant pitch and draft |
| Effectiveness rating | Rated most effective by SEO professionals surveyed in 2026, per Vefogix’s 2026 SEO benchmarking report | Rated notably lower by the same survey |
| Best for | Brand-mention signal, AI citation strength | Fast, targeted link acquisition |
We use both, weighted toward digital PR, because a real press mention tends to earn trust a purchased placement can’t.
Editorial standards matter just as much as tactic choice. A pitch has to be relevant to the publication’s actual audience, not just your target keyword. A HARO-style response has to answer the journalist’s question directly, on deadline, from someone who can speak credibly to the topic β a generic quote gets ignored. A guest post has to add something the publication’s readers don’t already have, not repackage your own service page in someone else’s voice.
If a previous agency has already left you with a spammy or irrelevant backlink profile, that gets addressed before new outreach starts, not after. We review the existing profile for links that could be actively hurting you β link exchange patterns, obvious PBN placements, anchor text that looks manipulated β and recommend a disavow file where it’s genuinely warranted, not as a default step for every client.

Why this matters for AI search
Backlinks still function as one of several trust signals AI systems use. They’re no longer the strongest one on their own.
A 2026 meta-analysis by Ahrefs and Zyppy across 75,000 brands found that brand mentions on authoritative sites correlate roughly three times more strongly with AI citation frequency than raw backlink counts.
That doesn’t make backlinks irrelevant. Google’s Gary Illyes has said publicly that “we need very few links to rank pages,” and John Mueller has described total link count as “completely irrelevant” to how Google weighs a page. Independent correlation research still finds backlinks associated with stronger rankings. Both things are true at once, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help you plan a campaign.
In practice, this is why our link building work leans on digital PR and editorial mentions rather than pure link volume. A genuine press mention builds the same brand-mention signal AI systems weight heavily, while also earning the link itself. A guest post on a relevant trade publication does something similar on a smaller scale β it puts your name and expertise in front of an audience an AI system may already treat as a credible source for that topic.
How we run a link building campaign
- Backlink and competitor audit β where you stand now, mapped against who’s actually ranking above you
- Prospect research β a curated, relevance-filtered list built by hand, not a mass database export
- Outreach and digital PR β personalized pitches, journalist response campaigns, and content-led placements
- Placement verification β confirming every link is live, follows, and points where it should, with anchor text checked
- Reporting and iteration β a monthly review of what placed, what didn’t, and why, feeding directly into the next audit

Who this is for
This service fits businesses that already have a site worth linking to. Solid content and a working local SEO or ecommerce SEO foundation come first. Link building is rarely the right first purchase on its own.
For local service businesses, that usually means a handful of genuinely relevant local and trade-press mentions. A plumber earning one link from a regional home-services publication does more than fifty links from unrelated blogs.
For ecommerce brands, it’s category-relevant press and comparison coverage β a roundup on a shopping publication, a mention in a gift-guide feature, coverage tied to a product launch. For SaaS companies, it’s typically digital PR tied to product data or original research a journalist can actually use, or guest contributions to industry publications their buyers already read.
Businesses actively rebuilding after a previous agency’s spammy link-building work also fit here β the audit and disavow step above exists specifically for that situation.
Results and proof
Independent ranking-factor research consistently finds pages in the top 10 for competitive terms carry substantially more backlinks, on average, than pages ranked lower for the same terms, per Backlinko’s ranking factors research. Separately, uSERP’s research found pages with roughly 30β35 backlinks generate over 10,500 visits per month on average β a second, independent figure, not one number carrying the whole argument.
What we can say honestly about our own work: our link building campaigns are built around the same research-first, digital-PR-led process described above, run consistently across client engagements. We don’t yet have a published, named case study specifically for link building to link here. That’s coming as current campaigns complete, and we’d rather say that plainly than dress up a number we can’t stand behind.

Link building FAQ
What is white hat link building? It’s earning links through genuine outreach, digital PR, and content worth linking to. Buying links in bulk from low-relevance sites or joining link exchange networks risks a Google penalty instead.
How much do link building services cost? Per 2026 SEO industry pricing surveys (including RankZ and Rhino Rank’s 2026 pricing guides), most sustainable campaigns run $1,000β$5,000+ per month depending on competitiveness and volume. Competitive industries like finance or legal often run higher. Per-link pricing alone is usually the wrong way to evaluate a quote β a $150 link and a $1,500 link can both be a poor investment if they’re irrelevant to your site.
Is link building still important for SEO in 2026? Google’s own spokespeople have said raw link counts matter less than they used to. Independent correlation research still finds backlinks strongly associated with higher rankings. Link building today works best as one part of a broader authority strategy, not the whole strategy on its own.
How many backlinks do I need? There’s no fixed number. The useful benchmark is the backlink profile of whatever’s currently ranking in positions 1β5 for your target keyword. Your goal is to be competitive with that, not to hit an arbitrary count.
Do backlinks still matter for AI search citations? Yes, but as a threshold signal rather than the main driver. Brand mentions and content structure do more of the work once a site clears that bar. Link building still contributes to both, particularly through digital PR.
What if my site already has spammy or low-quality backlinks from a previous agency? That gets audited first, before any new outreach starts. Not every low-quality link needs a disavow β some are simply ignored by search engines already β but ones showing clear manipulation patterns get flagged and addressed as part of the initial audit.
